Dr. Strawford Dees attained Board Certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1980. As one of these certified physicians, he meets and maintains the most stringent surgical training requirements and has the highest standards of certification for plastic surgery procedures. Dr. Dees also maintains a membership as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a scientific and educational association of surgeons founded to improve the quality of care for patients by setting high standards for surgical education and practice. As an FACS member, Dr. Dees’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed thorough evaluations and have been found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College. He has held membership for 37 years in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons.
Dr. Dees graduated from the University of Mississippi in Oxford in 1968. He continued his education at the Jackson campus where he was a 1972 graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. While serving on active duty for the United States Army, Dr. Dees completed his residency in general surgery at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, the army’s trauma center. This was followed by a residency in plastic surgery at the prestigious Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He also served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He later retired as a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. Upon returning to Mississippi in 1982, Dr. Dees began a private practice whereby he served his community by treating a wide variety of plastic surgery needs in the fields of trauma, burns, cancer reconstruction, hand surgery, and birth defects repair. Dr. Dees has a special interest in the treatment of deformities of the female breast, particularly with breast reconstruction following mastectomy. In 1992, shortly after the FDA’s moratorium and creation of the clinical trials on silicone-filled breast implants, he became one of the principal investigators. Hundreds of patients requiring breast augmentation or reconstruction were enrolled in this study before the FDA’s final approval of the implants in 2006. Dr. Dees was selected in 1998 by both Allergan and Mentor, the largest manufacturers of breast implants in the United States, to be one of their original 50 investigators for the cohesive gel breast implant study. This study was concluded with the FDA’s approval in 2013.
Dr. Dees’s primary emphasis in his practice is on the enhancement and disease treatment of the female breast. He is known for his skill in other surgeries including facial cosmetic procedures, abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and surgery for skin cancer. With improved developments of facial fillers and injectables, Dr. Dees also offers non-surgical facial aesthetic treatment that he considers potentially advantageous to certain patients.
